 The name that appeals to us and the personality type that we have came to us as a result of a decision we once made. As children, who had lost unconscious wholeness, each of us eventually made a decision about what must be done in order for us to be loved and to survive in the world.

This decision and our personality was formed out of the interaction of temperament and relationship. Each of us brings a unique energy into the world. It may be fast paced or laid back. It may be demanding or accepting. What ever the energy is, it interacts with our caregivers’ personality and in the process our personality is formed. This formation process is through deciding what life requires of us. We each make a choice about what we must do.

The Enneagram says there are nine choices which lead to the nine possibilities of personality. Review the following nine choices and see which one was yours.

  • Type One - Reformer

Decides that you must be perfect and do everything right in order to be loved and survive.

  • Type Two - Helper

Decides that if you are always helpful and meet others needs then you will be loved

  • Type Three - Motivator

Decides that you must always achieve and accomplish in order to be loved and survive.

  • Type Four - Individualist

Decides that if you are different in a special way then others will value the difference and be drawn to you. You will be loved and survive.

  • Type Five - Thinker

Decides that you must be knowledgeable and understand everything in order to be loved and survive.

  • Type Six - Loyalist

Decides that if you are always faithful, loyal, and dependable then you will be loved and survive.

  • Type Seven - Enthusiast

Decides that if you are fun loving, happy, and brighten other people’s day then you will to be loved and survive.

  • Type Eight - Leader

Decides that if you are strong and powerful people will respect you. You will survive because you can make them love you.

  • Type Nine - Peacemaker

Decides that if you are peace loving, never rock the boat, and always smooth things over then you will be loved and survive.

These decisions determine both positive and negative personality characteristics.
