Learn to Relax

Of the three options
for confronting stress, the third, undoing what stress is doing to you is the most
immediately effective. While you can control some of the stressors of life; life will
always find a new way to stress you. Learning to think about stressors in a different
manner requires that you begin thinking about how you think. This is a new skill for many
people and requires much practice. The option of "undoing" what stress is doing
to you means that you learn a method of relaxing on purpose. There are many means of
relaxing and some are easily taught and practiced. Best of all they begin to work
immediately. We will look at an easy, practical means of relaxing that is guaranteed to work. It is guaranteed to because it is based on something over which you have control-- the voluntary muscles of your body. It is known as systematic muscle relaxation. All you have to do is to purposefully create a brief, mild state of tension in all the major muscle groups and then allow them to relax. As you do so you will trigger what is known as the "relaxation response." |
